Since formation in June 1986, the practice has carried out a variety of commissions demonstrating expertise in the manipulation of spaces within historic buildings in the university and church sectors.
The reordering of churches and historic fabric repairs is the main workload of the practice at present, along with our schools commitments.
Our expertise is in exploiting the volumes of historic buildings of this type to provide much needed additional accommodation economically within the shell of the existing building, if possible, and designing 'with the grain' of the architecture to create appropriate, stimulating and user friendly spaces. Some of our projects also offer the option of new-build accommodation.
Examples of our work are as follows;
Conversion of a redundant listed church to provide a lecture theatre with 400 seats, the university's largest at that time, and 29 study-bedrooms with en-suite facilities for post-grad students. We received the RIBA Yorkshire Region's White Rose Commendation for this project in 1995. |
Conversion of a six storey mill, with masonry walls, cast iron frame, brick arch floors etc., to become the base for the Faculty of Computing and Mathematics. Designed within the context of the university's development plan for which we were the consultants, this building gained the White Rose Award in 1996, together with the British Archaeological Award and a Civic Trust Commendation. |
Two floors of new accommodation have been provided above ground floor linked by a new west seating balcony over a narthex with kitchen, crèche, etc. This proved to be something of a 'landmark' project for its innovative use of existing space, and we have worked on other similar projects developing these ideas. |
Provided a west end seating balcony over a new narthex in a full reordering and modernisation of this prominent parish church with its Gregorian nave and huge High Victorian Gothic arched chancel, transcept and east end by Temple Moore. |
First phase internal reordering prior to the second phase community hall. Provided first floor meeting room / choir robing over narthex, crèche, kitchen and upgraded disabled person toilet facilities. The fully serviced worship area now has underfloor heating and a retractable altar platform to allow great flexibility. |
Provided two new meeting rooms with toilets at balcony level, narthex, community meeting space with separate crèche and kitchen, redesigned ground floor toilets at the base of the tower along with a full overhaul of the heating system and complete redecoration throughout the church. |
Reordering of Grade II* Church, welcome area with kitchen, toilets and parish Office at ground floor; wheelchair platform lift to mezzanine waiting area and Clergy office; meeting room; balcony and toilet at first floor; meeting room with balconies at second floor. Winner of the EASA Presidents Award 2005. |
Reordering to give a welcome area with parish office, toilets and kitchen area at ground floor accessed via new West End entrance giving disabled access with glass doors: wheelchair platform lift to first floor community room with storage and kitchen areas. Removal of pews and choir stalls to be replaced with flexible loose seats, and provision of a raised communion platform.

We are currently dealing with several further reordering projects in churches in the Derby, Sheffield and Wakefield Dioceses, including Grimethorpe and St Luke's Parish Centre Sheffield.
